Put a Little Stank On It
As we all know, I'm a huge proponent of playing music during your practice. While most yogis gravitate towards more "traditional" music from the likes of Krishna Das, Deva Prema, and Jai-Jagdeesh, my speakers bump tunes from Van Morrison, Tom Petty, and George Michael. I treat my practice like I treat my life - keep it casual, keep it fun, and always sing along.
Though my playlist is pretty non-traditional, there is a common thread of "zen" in every songs to maintain a consistent pace throughout class (since I just let the playlist shuffle) - slower beats, acoustic covers, little bass, and no moments of real intensity. So, the practice stays flowy and light.
However, there are times where I need a little more....stank...in my practice. I want it dirty. I want it sweaty. And I want it LOUD. So, I've spent the last few months compiling my Badass Yogi playlist...and I'd like to share it with you, my fellow Badasses.
When you want to SWEAT
Blood in the Cut (K.Flay)
This is one of those songs that revs you up in the beginning then lets you rip and roar through to the end. It has some naughty language, so yogi discretion is advised.
Change (In the House of Flies)
Another one that builds in intensity, this one feels super raw and dirty. Perfect for a nasty sweat sesh.
My Name is Human
My interpretation of the lyrics differ from the artists' intention: I see it as a badass anthem for those who realize we are all divine.
Naughty lyrics again!
When you want to feel SEXY
Ok, don't even pretend this song doesn't get you groovin'. This one will help you put a little stank on your mat!
You know I love my covers! This one is less about the lyrics and more about the instrumental interpretation and gritty power of Cornell's voice (RIP).
Heard this puppy play during the credits of Magic Mike (QUALITY MOVIE) and was immediately addicted. Move slow like molasses through this one.
When you want to PLAY
Feel it Still (Portugal. The Man)
A new favorite! This one has a funky 60's James Bond feel to it (as described by one of my students). Makes me want to Beach Blanket Bingo all over my mat!
(Kungs vs. Cookin on 3 Burners)
A random find thanks to Spotify recommendations, this one feels like a summer dance party anthem. Crank it up and dance it out!
I dig the foreign lyrics in this one. Another Spotify reco, it'll bebop you right through to the end.
Don't dig my selects? Totally cool! Find what breathes some life into your practice and share it with me!
